Lighting Sparks

Sadly, it has been way over a month since I last posted...shame. Back to business! In my last post I promised to review the second book in The Hunger Games trilogy, "Catching Fire". Hopefully by now (with ample extra time) you have read the first book, The Hunger Games! But in case you have not then: ultimate spoiler alert! This book tends to be my second favorite in the series with Mockingjay as my least. But, it still holds an important place in the plot of the whole series.
  "Sparks are igniting.
 Flames are Spreading.
And the Capitol wants revenge."
Catching Fire (The Second Book of the Hunger Games)
On the movie: Catching Fire will have the same actors and actresses and The Hunger Games, thank goodness! But, there is a new producer, Stephen Spielburg. Who has won many awards and wowed audiences with intense movies such as: Men in Black, Transformers, Real Steel, and pretty much everything else. Let's hope he does a spectacular job re-creating such an awesome book!

Before beginning I have to spoil the end of the first book! Here goes, Peeta and Katniss both made it out of the games as the final victors, but barely. Katniss and Peeta go their separate ways when the games begin even to the point of trying to kill each other. But, Peeta has some secrets! Halfway through the games it is announced that two tributes from the same district may survive together. Immediately Katniss goes in search for a very wounded Peeta. Stuck in a cave due to Peeta's mortal wound they grow to know and even love each other. Problem being that Katniss is doing most of it only for the cameras. Peeta? Not so much. Down to the final 3 Peeta receives another wound as they are being hunted by insane creatures. Once the other tribute is killed by the creatures with Katniss' help only Katniss and Peeta are left. Another announcement comes proclaiming a withdrawal of the previous statement. Struck with a brilliant idea Katniss and Peeta both eat poison berries, but do not swallow. Because the Capitol must have a victor they are then proclaimed the victors! But the trouble does not end there. Without immediate survival necessary Katniss certainly lets Peeta know her feelings are not matching his.

Now, onto the best part, the book! Catching Fire is not as filled with action as The Hunger Games, in the beginning. It starts out in Katniss' hometown, District 12. But this time everything has changed. For better or worse? Katniss and her family have moved into the Victor's Village, neighbors to the almost always drunk Haymitch Abernathy, and her "lover" Peeta Mellark. The family now receives ample food and is pampered more than Katniss could have imagined. So what's wrong? Problem is that she does not want to live life easy. Hunting was all she knew to do and with that taken away who is she? To make matters worse her best friend and old hunting partner, Gale is now working full time at the mines. This leaves Katniss to her own devices each day. To make matters worse President Snow is not happy at all with the berries trick. He is convinced Katniss did it not out of love, but to incite rebellion. And unfortunately for the President, it is working, intentionally or not. At the end of the first book Peeta and Katniss were not exactly seeing eye to eye. After having practically rejected Peeta they go their separate ways but, only behind the camera backs! To the country of Panem they are still "The Star-Crossed Lovers From District 12". Soon they are forced back together when they embark on the Victory Tour across the districts. And yet again Katniss begins to fall for the boy with the bread.

* Full Spoils*
Thankfully, Susan Collins had the sense to add enough action into this book so as to appease all readers (including me!). Throughout the book Katniss is able to hear or see glimpses of rebellions starting throughout the country. Districts are rising up. Taking stands. And she was the one who began it all. With all of this to digest Katniss has her hands full. Then About half way through the book an unexpected turn comes: the 75th Annual Hunger Games. This particular game is important because it is a quarter quell. The first quarter quell (when Haymitch won) required instead of 2, 4 tributes be chosen from each district. Doubling the death toll. The shocking part is the new requirement: (a bit too convenient for President Snow) instead of choosing new tributes victors will be sent in. Katniss will be back in the arena with either Peeta or Haymitch. Back to her living hell.

Also did not get a chance to mention one of the funniest characters: Effie! Here is Elizabeth Bank's portrayal of Katniss' crazy organizer.

And finally, an awesome picture of director Gary Ross, Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss), Josh Hutcherson (Peeta), and Liam Hemsworth (Gale) done for Hollywood Reporter. Along with a shout-out to my math teacher, who is pretty much the only one not related to me that reads this blog....thanks!;) Only 22 days until the premeire!

The Girl on Fire

Today's post is on one of my ultimate favorite books ever: "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins. "The Hunger Games" is the first book of a trilogy, followed by "Catching Fire" and "Mockingjay". Most excitingly Lionsgate is now coming out with a movie following the book. The movie, The Hunger Games, is to be out March 23, 2012. They are also working on the second movie, to be directed by award winning Stephen Speilburg. To follow movie updates and anything else on the book check out  http://www.myhungergames.com/category/news or http://thehob.org/. Both websites are filled with the latest new on anything and everything Hunger Games. The main character, Katniss, is to be played by Jennifer Lawrence with follow up actors Liam Hensworth as Gale and Josh Hutcherson as Peeta. Check out the trailer (**be warned book spoilers in trailer**) http://www.myhungergames.com/the-hunger-games-trailer. So far most fans (including me) are extremely pleased with how the trailer is lining up with the books. I hope that Lionsgate's interpretation does justice to the books!

On to the book itself, "The Hunger Games" is all about survival. Set in a now destroyed North America lies the nation of Panem, cruely controlled by the Capitol. Katniss Everdeen, the main character lives in District twelve, which is a small "county" that specializes in mining coal. The book begins with Katniss volunteering for her little sister to fight against 23 others kids to the death in an arena. Each year the Capitol chooses two children, boy and girl, between the ages of 12 and 18 from all 12 districts to compete in the Hunger Games. Katniss and Peeta Mellark are the tributes for District twelve and instantly are sent to the Capitol to train. Meanwhile, Katniss' best friend at home, Gale, hunts for and cares for her mother and sister Prim. At the games the stakes are raised and all friendships, loves, and alliances disappear. "Winning means fame and fortune. Losing means certain death. The Hunger Games have begun....."The Hunger Games Cast
 The main cast.

The Hunger Games is overall an excellent book. I would say more but I don't want to give to much away! I can only say the ending is quite satisfactory if not a little sad. The story takes excellent turns and twists, but nothing so dramatic as to upset fans. Thankfully! Suzanne Collins did a spectacular job in portraying the entire story and the values of life and death over friendships and love. To be honest I read the whole series in 3 days, which is very fast for the size of the books. Just to show how addicting they were. Next post will be on Catching Fire, the second book in the series. So read up fast! Or if you are not a reader wait to see the movie coming out this March 23, 2012!

Starting Small

With this being my first post ever, I decided to start with the basics. If you have not already figured out, I am going to mainly be writing about books that I have read, want to read, and practically anything else bookish. At the very moment I am reading "The Son of Neptune" by Rick Riordan, but that's another post for another week!
This week's book is "The Little White Horse", merely because it is a classic and one of my favorites.
The story centers around Maria Merryweather, an orphan who arrives at Moonacre Manor with her loyal dog, Wiggins, and Miss Heliotrope, her mistress. Upon arrival Maria meets her uncle Sir Benjamin, the ultimate gentleman. Maria falls in love with the animals, countryside, and townsfolk. But, amidst all of the happiness and serenity is a deep sadness. A great tragedy shadows everything in the valley, and Maria is determined to figure out what happened and right it.
Throughout the story one meets charming characters and falls in love with the land just as Maria does. The author, Elizabeth Goudge, does an spectacular job describing and enhancing "The Little White Horse". Written in old English, it may be hard for some to follow, but for a teen to an adult craving a new fairy tale, this is a real treasure. My sister read this book to me at ten, and while I loved it I am not sure I  truly appreciated the quality nor understood some of what was being said. Now that I have read it at an older age I absolutely adore it and recommend it to many of my friends as a delightful tale.
