The Girl on Fire

Today's post is on one of my ultimate favorite books ever: "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins. "The Hunger Games" is the first book of a trilogy, followed by "Catching Fire" and "Mockingjay". Most excitingly Lionsgate is now coming out with a movie following the book. The movie, The Hunger Games, is to be out March 23, 2012. They are also working on the second movie, to be directed by award winning Stephen Speilburg. To follow movie updates and anything else on the book check out  http://www.myhungergames.com/category/news or http://thehob.org/. Both websites are filled with the latest new on anything and everything Hunger Games. The main character, Katniss, is to be played by Jennifer Lawrence with follow up actors Liam Hensworth as Gale and Josh Hutcherson as Peeta. Check out the trailer (**be warned book spoilers in trailer**) http://www.myhungergames.com/the-hunger-games-trailer. So far most fans (including me) are extremely pleased with how the trailer is lining up with the books. I hope that Lionsgate's interpretation does justice to the books!

On to the book itself, "The Hunger Games" is all about survival. Set in a now destroyed North America lies the nation of Panem, cruely controlled by the Capitol. Katniss Everdeen, the main character lives in District twelve, which is a small "county" that specializes in mining coal. The book begins with Katniss volunteering for her little sister to fight against 23 others kids to the death in an arena. Each year the Capitol chooses two children, boy and girl, between the ages of 12 and 18 from all 12 districts to compete in the Hunger Games. Katniss and Peeta Mellark are the tributes for District twelve and instantly are sent to the Capitol to train. Meanwhile, Katniss' best friend at home, Gale, hunts for and cares for her mother and sister Prim. At the games the stakes are raised and all friendships, loves, and alliances disappear. "Winning means fame and fortune. Losing means certain death. The Hunger Games have begun....."The Hunger Games Cast
 The main cast.

The Hunger Games is overall an excellent book. I would say more but I don't want to give to much away! I can only say the ending is quite satisfactory if not a little sad. The story takes excellent turns and twists, but nothing so dramatic as to upset fans. Thankfully! Suzanne Collins did a spectacular job in portraying the entire story and the values of life and death over friendships and love. To be honest I read the whole series in 3 days, which is very fast for the size of the books. Just to show how addicting they were. Next post will be on Catching Fire, the second book in the series. So read up fast! Or if you are not a reader wait to see the movie coming out this March 23, 2012!

Starting Small

With this being my first post ever, I decided to start with the basics. If you have not already figured out, I am going to mainly be writing about books that I have read, want to read, and practically anything else bookish. At the very moment I am reading "The Son of Neptune" by Rick Riordan, but that's another post for another week!
This week's book is "The Little White Horse", merely because it is a classic and one of my favorites.
The story centers around Maria Merryweather, an orphan who arrives at Moonacre Manor with her loyal dog, Wiggins, and Miss Heliotrope, her mistress. Upon arrival Maria meets her uncle Sir Benjamin, the ultimate gentleman. Maria falls in love with the animals, countryside, and townsfolk. But, amidst all of the happiness and serenity is a deep sadness. A great tragedy shadows everything in the valley, and Maria is determined to figure out what happened and right it.
Throughout the story one meets charming characters and falls in love with the land just as Maria does. The author, Elizabeth Goudge, does an spectacular job describing and enhancing "The Little White Horse". Written in old English, it may be hard for some to follow, but for a teen to an adult craving a new fairy tale, this is a real treasure. My sister read this book to me at ten, and while I loved it I am not sure I  truly appreciated the quality nor understood some of what was being said. Now that I have read it at an older age I absolutely adore it and recommend it to many of my friends as a delightful tale.
