On to the book itself, "The Hunger Games" is all about survival. Set in a now destroyed North America lies the nation of Panem, cruely controlled by the Capitol. Katniss Everdeen, the main character lives in District twelve, which is a small "county" that specializes in mining coal. The book begins with Katniss volunteering for her little sister to fight against 23 others kids to the death in an arena. Each year the Capitol chooses two children, boy and girl, between the ages of 12 and 18 from all 12 districts to compete in the Hunger Games. Katniss and Peeta Mellark are the tributes for District twelve and instantly are sent to the Capitol to train. Meanwhile, Katniss' best friend at home, Gale, hunts for and cares for her mother and sister Prim. At the games the stakes are raised and all friendships, loves, and alliances disappear. "Winning means fame and fortune. Losing means certain death. The Hunger Games have begun....."
The main cast.
The Hunger Games is overall an excellent book. I would say more but I don't want to give to much away! I can only say the ending is quite satisfactory if not a little sad. The story takes excellent turns and twists, but nothing so dramatic as to upset fans. Thankfully! Suzanne Collins did a spectacular job in portraying the entire story and the values of life and death over friendships and love. To be honest I read the whole series in 3 days, which is very fast for the size of the books. Just to show how addicting they were. Next post will be on Catching Fire, the second book in the series. So read up fast! Or if you are not a reader wait to see the movie coming out this March 23, 2012!
